At the United Nations Headquarters on May 24th, 2007, Rescue a Million's Every Child a Hero breakfast was held to celebrate the heroes that lie within every child and youth.
The breakfast began with a special performance by Promethean Spark, a nonprofit organization dedicated to mobilizing artists worldwide to help fight poverty at its roots by helping underprivleged children develop their potential. The number began with a group of children dancing and then featured professional dancers from Broadway Productions of A Chorusline, Mamma Mia!, Wicked, and The Lion King, as well as the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, Staten Island Ballet, Naganuma Dance Company and even Miss Greater NYC. The children and professionals then danced together in an incredible finale, showing the power each one of us has to reach out and help a child realize their potential.
Eveyone was then given the opportunity to look over the essays and artwork by Every Child a Hero program participants that were displayed on their individual tables. Afterwards, they wrote Thank You notes to children who participated in the Every Child a Hero program to thank them for making a difference. The performance was followed by an address by Rescue a Million's Founder and President, Julie Butler, and a video presentation of how the Every Child a Hero program is impacting children in the United States as they realize their potential to impact the world around them. Thanks to the Young Heroes at Encanto School who are featured in the video!
Lauren Prince, who just completed her freshman year at Boston University, then shared some of her experiences visiting some of Rescue a Million's project partner sites in Africa with her mother, JaLynn, and Ms. Butler. JaLynn and Lauren documented their findings in the field through photography and their photo exhibition debuted at the event. Their photos allowed guests a unique glimpse into how the lives of children are being changed for the better thanks to Rescue a Million's generous supporters, both old and young alike!
Lauren was followed by Becky Douglas who spoke about one of Rescue a Million's project partner's work with in how to reach the poorest of the poor through microcredit in leprosy colonies.
Rescue a Million's 2007 Young Heroes of the Year were then invited to come up and speak about their efforts to save children and the environment. Our Young Heroes of the Year this year were Chanelle Adams, James Quadrino, and Dara Shore. Churchill School was chosen as the Young Heroes School of the Year and sent three outstanding student leaders as representatives. The accomplishments of these young people are truly extraordinary. A special thanks to all our supporters who are helping us expand the Every Child a Hero program to reach more students in the United States and help them realize their potential to be a hero at home, in school, within their communities, and throughout the world!
